We are always meeting new people and majority of the time we might not know anything about them. Making connections and networking can be done at any event. Do not be afraid to present yourself. If there is someone who you have wanted to meet or who you know you should talk to, do it. For a lot of people opportunities are a result of a conversation. Even if you are talking with someone who you know nothing about, still take advantage. During these conversations, talk a little about you; start with the basics: your name, where you are from, and your major. Hopefully they will be interested in what you are doing and hearing about your future plans. This information about you can lead to further conversation and great opportunities, like graduate school or a job.
College has challenged me to explore my identity and my culture. I have been learning about the importance of embracing my culture and presenting myself as a Latina has become even more important. Being of a different background makes me valuable. I bring a different perspective to everything that I do. As a Latina I need to take pride and take advantage of the manner in which I can market and present myself.
As you continue on in life, always be ready with your story and ready to hear the story of others. Some connections will foster in to strong relationships, while some might not. We should not be discouraged by those that don’t grow and instead make sure that the connections that do are the best that they can be. Always remember that there is always people watching and listening to you that can end up as a helping hand, so just be ready to be who you are and advocate for yourself.
