A few weekends ago, I joined other EMERGE Scholars to welcome former Mayor of Houston, Annise Parker to Boston. As the President of the EMERGE Scholar Board, I was in charge of having the brunch go smoothly. This was the first time that I was in charge of something as important as this brunch.
Meeting Mayor Parker and having brunch next to her was amazing. She has done so much for the city of Houston and is an inspiration to many of us. It still amazes me that I was sharing a meal with such an important person, hearing from her and answering her questions. I look back and think how I once believed personally meeting with her would ever be a possibility. Growing up in a low-income family, in a mostly minority region of the city, I never would have thought that I would meet anyone as important as Mayor Parker, but thanks to EMERGE, I was able to do something that I thought would be impossible.
