Writing is essential to the research process. It is important to be able to effectively communicate research. One of my advisors revised a paper that I worked on for about a month and found many little mistakes. These were something that could have been avoided, had I paid attention to how I was writing. I have also been doing a lot of revising in addition to reading and writing. The revision process is not always easy and seems never ending. I have revised the same paper three times already and each time I get it back with something else to correct. Through the writing process that I am currently going through, I have learned that the revision step is just as important as anything else.
Everyone can write, but not everyone can effectively communicate what he or she is saying. This skill is especially important in research because you are constantly meeting other people, scholars or not, and have the opportunity to discuss what you are working on. Sometimes this discussion time is very limited, so you have to know how to tell someone what you are working on and its importance in a concise manner. Effective communication of research happens like verbally, and on paper, like how I have been working. Even though I know my research and what I am writing about, this does not mean that the people reading my work will know. For this reason, I have to write in a clear manner.
The skills that I am developing this summer are not only learned through summer research. We are always reading, writing, and communicating. If you are presented with the opportunity to participate in something that will allow you to gain and work on various skills, take advantage.
