As we live our lives, we are going to get a lot of advice. Sometimes, we know what we want, and other times, we just do not. Like our desires, sometimes, the advice you get will be great, and other times, the advice you get will be unwarranted and unwanted. However, regardless of the advice you get, you have the ultimate decision of taking it or not. You get to decide how you want to live your life, especially while you are in college.
As a low-income minority student, I totally understand the effect of being somewhat, or even fully, responsible for your family in your life. I, like many others, am proud to be from a low-income, minority family that comes from a “shithole” country because we always find a way to take care of each other, but we also have to realize that family should not hold you back. If anything, family should consider your wants and desires and support the best option for you. If they do not, demonstrate how important what you do is to you.
If they still do not get it, they do not have to because they are not family; they become obstacles that try to hold you back. Do not let anyone who is in your “family” hold you back. Stand up for what you want and make your true passions known to everyone.
