Nickelodeon, a very prominent, Viacom-owned television show network, has decided to incorporate a new type of show in a programming block for preschoolers, according to NYtimes.com.
"Nella the Princess Knight" will demonstrate a whole new realm of boundary pushing, well, in the eyes of toddlers. "Nella" will be biracial, with a black father and white mother. Not that being biracial is uncommon, but when it comes to television shows, that is not a situation that is portrayed very often. NYtimes.com states that they based this decision amongst research indicating that "most children under 12 will be nonwhite by 2020 and that already 17 percent are biracial". Nella, the self-empowered princess, will also challenge traditional gender norms. Although riding a pink pony, she will also carry with her a sword and wear knight gear.
There might be people who disagree with this notion, but I believe it is importance to introducer diverse relationships at a young age. A 3-year-old might not completely comprehend what is happening, but sooner or later it will teach tolerance and acceptance.
