Nowadays schools education gets taken for granted because people no longer see education as a scarce resource. For example, Frederick Douglas, who under oppression broke the boundaries of being illiterate because he was a slave, compared to a student nowadays who has the opportunity to be educated and refuses to go to class. We do not value education for what it is anymore. Most students do not realize that education used to be a “pathway to freedom”, like Frederick Douglas stated. Students now see education as an obligation and something that is overrated.
People become educated not because they are eager to learn, but because it has become a forced requirement. It is sad to sit next to a student that will ask questions like “why do I have to learn about this material? I am not going to use this in my life.” They do not realize it will help them become a well-rounded person. To become educated meant for us to learn about the world, our purpose, and to help each other out.
The absence of quality in education has risen because the lack of efficiency in the schools systems. Learning from Mr. Reesors Philosophy class at Texas State University, I learned that Plato, Aristotle and so many other philosophers challenged each other by participating in Socratic Seminars. Unlike today, Richard Feynman describes, the “Banking System” all students are being fed facts to memorize just to pass their exams. This may not be a generalized statement because there may be students that actually do learn, but this situation does happen now and then. We are missing out on many valuable opportunities because we are misinterpreting the real definition of being well educated.
