Summer opportunities is basically anything you do over the summer that can help you set you apart from others. This can vary from volunteer work, maintaining a summer job, shadowing someone, having an internship or even attending a lab.
Some of the things that I did over the summer was volunteer at a summer camp designed for spina bifida children. Spina Bifida is a malformation of the spine that impairs a lot of children and doesn’t always allow them to walk. This was a week long trip and it really opened my eyes to the different ways that people live. The summer camp is called The Camp that Love Built. They are always looking for volunteers. One of my favorite summer opportunities was attending the RICE Summer Business Institute. I believe it is still a program being held every summer for 2 weeks where high school students are introduced to the business world by actual professors at the university. It was very eye opening and it allowed me to make great connections with professors build my network. The link for their website is: https://business.rice.edu/rice-summer-business-institute.
Colleges understand that during the school year students are busy with school and work but summer is a great time for students to really take advantage of the extra time and develop skills that can’t be taught in the classroom. Overall, your counselors and the internet are amazing sources to getting started.
