I never liked the idea of being judged based on who I considered my friends, but the thought is true. Your friends or acquaintances do reflect on who you are as a person and help you build your success. This doesn't mean that you can't be friends with certain people, you can.
My marketing professor talked about this and how it has affected him. In his experience, he was about to apply to grad school which can be very competitive. Nowadays social media is a really big way to market yourself. Many employers and even schools take a look at your social media before the interview and if you have something that doesn't please them you might be at risk of continuing onto the next step of the process. My professor knew that some of his stuff that his friends tagged him on his social media profiles weren't very job appropriate so he decided to clean his profile a bit. You have to make sure that the image you set will be approved by your potential employer or colleague.
In my personal experience my friends have helped me succeed a lot. One of my friends was able to refer me into one of the classes that I really wanted to take and thanks to her help my interview went smoothly and I received a spot in the class.
The reason for this blog is only to encourage you to seek to better yourself from the people around you. Help them succeed and they will help you succeed.
